Preparing our students for the world of work…

Work Related Learning

How it works…

Pinewood pupils are expected, throughout the Key Stages, to address different aspects of the world of work. In Key Stage 3 this is generally addressed through the P.S.H.C.E curriculum. In Key Stage 4, provision is made for all pupils to recognise, develop and apply their skills for enterprise and employability. All pupils are given an experience of work, where they can undertake tasks and activities to extend their understanding of the work place.

Some pupils are able to access an independent work placement, which is arranged by the school through the Careers service. It is more beneficial for some pupils to have a more limited, supported work experience based here at Pinewood School. They are encouraged to apply some of the learning gained from work experience to their Key stage 4 courses and their career planning.

In Year 10 we have in recent years been able to attend Opportunity’s Day at The University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield. This has proved not only to be a thoroughly enjoyable day, but a real opportunity for pupils to have ‘hands on’ experiences of different employment and speak to people who are doing those jobs.

Pupils also undertake activities to develop their skills to manage their further career aspirations. This includes guidance interviews with the Connexions personal advisors that focus on their Post 16 education.  Pupils prepare their CV’s and learn through work experience interviews, how to present themselves well.

Throughout Key Stage 4 pupils are expected to reflect on and record achievements, abilities, interests and skills and use them to make realistic choices for progression after Key Stage 4.
