Bereavement

Short Definition:

Bereavement is a period of mourning or state of intense grief, especially following the death of a loved one. Bereavement is often a process that includes going through several stages of grief. Bereavement can also be used more generally to mean the state of having lost something very dear.

The below video gives an insight into Bereavement, and how it can affect a child.

 

Jacqueline’s Useful Tips:

  • Talk to your child about loss.
  • Talk about the person or pet who has died and been lost. Share memories.
  • Encourage your child to express how they are feeling.
  • Let them know it’s ok to feel however they are feeling.
  • Be empathetic and non-judgemental about how they are feeling.
  • Reassure them that you love them.
  • If your child finds it difficult to talk. Carry out an activity together side by side.
  • Give them space.
  • Keep normal routines going.
  • Reach out to your child’s school for support.
  • Be honest about your feelings.
