Promoting teamwork, leadership and effective communication

Encouraging competitive spirit!

At Pinewood we believe that some very important lifelong values are taught through playing sport in a competitive situation, such as teamwork, leadership, communication skills, fair play, problem solving and the ability to win and loose with dignity. Some PE lessons contain competition but pupils mainly have the opportunity to play competitive sport in inter-house competitions and also at inter-school competitions.

The inter-house competitions promote the sense of belonging, pride and also give all types of pupils the chance to achieve. Competitions are often seeded or have multiple disciplines based around the one sport so that pupils all compete against pupils of a similar ability. Competitions include: Football, Netball, Basketball, Boccia, Cross Country, Cricket, Rounders, Athletics/Sports Day and a Swimming Gala. Above all there is a great deal of emphasis on fun. The competitions are always lots of fun and often involve the whole school participating at once. We also host an annual Year 11 vs staff football and rounders match, which are probably the most competitive of all. Currently the staff are undefeated!

The school competes at a number of sports against other special schools including: Football, Basketball, Dodgeball, Boccia, Table Tennis, Badminton, Cross Country and Athletics. We are currently the reigning champions in the East Region at Cross Country having won the overall competition in Norwich 2017. In addition to this a number of our pupils are also National Champions in various Athletics events having achieved gold medals at the 2017 National Mencap Athletics Championships. We push talented pupils into competition as much as possible and encourage pupils to join clubs outside of school. A number of our pupils participate in Special Olympics clubs and represent East Herts in Special Olympics competitions.

Our pupils also have the opportunity to take part in Wheelchair Rugby at Pinewood School in partnership with Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby. 6-week coaching sessions occur periodically after school throughout the year which all pupils are invited to sign up to. This is a very popular club and there are limited spaces. Pinewood School have participated in the Great Britain BT Wheelchair Rugby Youth Tournament for the previous two years having won the tournament in 2015 and narrowly missing out on retaining the title in 2016.
