Key Stage 4 pupils are given significant support to try to ensure that they make informed choices about their Post 16 education. An Information Evening has now been introduced for Year 11 pupils and parents, as part of the Transition process. Pinewood pupils have the opportunity to apply for many varied courses which are suitable for them when they leave.
Pupils often choose to continue their Post 16 education at Herts Regional College (HRC). The Department of Inclusive Learning (DIL) has purpose built accommodation on the Ware site. Many of our pupils follow courses in that department, as they are encouraged to continue with literacy and numeracy whilst having opportunities to join vocational courses. Some pupils have also had the opportunity to experience the kinds of activities available there, when taking part in the School / College link courses. The college is familiar to them and transition becomes easier for those who are apprehensive about change.
HRC also provides courses on Catering, Hair and Beauty, Childcare and Sports Studies, Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Construction. The Construction Dept also includes Painting and Decorating and Electrical courses.
Harlow College or North Herts College are sometime chosen destnations for those pupils living in or around those areas of the county.
The NET (North Herts Transition Unit) is also in Stevenage. This is a small department which provides more vulnerable students with a supported environment and curriculum, before going to large a college.
Another popular choice among Pinewood leavers is Oaklands College. The college is quite near to the Galleria between Hatfield and St Albans. Pupils wishing to pursue a career with animals, or in horticulture find that the “Landmark ‘course is for them. Other courses are available including Construction and Leisure and Tourism. Again some pupils will have taken part in the Pinewood link course with Oaklands.
Our pupils occasionally access Capel Manor at Enfield. Those pupils who are successful in obtaining a place there have followed the Horticulture or Animal care courses.
