On Sunday 11th October nine students from Pinewood School Academy Trust represented Saracens Wheelchair Rugby Youth team at the Great Britain BT Wheelchair Rugby Youth Tournament in the Copper Box Arena at the Olympic Park, Stratford.
The pupils had been attending Wheelchair Rugby training sessions, with expert coaching and support from Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby, at Pinewood School on Monday afternoons since April. This was thanks to the Mayor of London Sports Legacy Fund and to Lottery Funding distributed by Sport England, in preparation for this prestigious tournament.
Pinewood’s Wheelchair Rugby team consisted of Ellie, Jason, Bradley, Daniel, Thomas, Justis, Ryan, Emily and Jamie.
The team won three of their four group matches against Harlequins (12-6), Exeter Hawks (15-8) and Mavericks (16-6) whilst narrowly losing to Wales (8-12). Pinewood won the group and progressed to the final where they met Exeter Hawks. All students played incredibly well in the final and Pinewood won the match 15-8 with Daniel and Jason scoring four tries each and Thomas closely following with three tries.
All Pinewood students and staff had a fantastic day and thoroughly enjoyed the tournament, whilst representing both themselves and the school to the best of their ability. Pinewood Saracens pupils were awarded with gold medals and the winner’s trophy at the end of the BT Wheelchair Rugby Youth Tournament. Pinewood would like to thank the Saracens Foundation for their continued support of the wheelchair rugby programme in the school.
